Richard Bates Stamp Designer

Richard Bates was born in Sydney in 1930 after graduation from Missingham’s Art School he gained a cadetship with Michael Nairn, where he progressed to become chief designer. In 1968 he entered the Stamp News Captain Cook Stamp Design Competition, which he won, but the designs were rejected by the Australian Postmaster General’s Department. Fortunately the Government of Papua New Guinea were more receptive to his designs as were the Administrations on Norfolk and Christmas Islands. His first commission was for PNG in 1970 and he continued to gain commission through 1995.

In 1999 a friend of Richard’s, Edward Mouatt, established the collection of art work and finished products that now make the Philas House Richard Bates Collection and the material was bequeathed to Philas upon Richard Bates death in 2001.
